BANYAN UNVEILS SET OF SOFTWARE UTILITIES
FOR VINES NETWORK SUPPORT AND MANAGEMENT
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today introduced the
Banyan VINES~ Assistant, a set of network support and management
utilities for on-line diagnostics, performance tuning and
troubleshooting of VINES networks. Developed to meet the
needs of VINES users and channel partners, the initial offering of
the VINES Assistant includes 17 utilities found most useful by
Banyan's Advanced Network Services (ANS) Group.
Functions performed by VINES Assistant include:
Gathering information crucial to network performance
and reliability
Auditing network configurations and preventing
problems from occurring
Modifying global network configurations
Automating regular network maintenance tasks
Automatic monitoring of critical indicators of
network availability
Available as a software option for VINES Version 4.0 or later, the
VINES Assistant delivers the information and functions necessary to
maximize network performance and end-user productivity. The core
set of utilities provided complements many of the utilities and
network management products available from third-party developers.
Significantly reducing the time and effort required for network
management and lowering the overall cost of ownership, the VINES
Assistant simplifies administrative tasks, assists in tuning
network performance, and provides advance notification to system
administrators of potential problems. The utilities also
significantly improve the administrator's ability to troubleshoot
and resolve problems.
"The VINES Assistant is an excellent example of the products that
characterize Banyan's mission, namely, to simplify the use and
management of distributed networks," said Greg Reyes, Banyan Vice
President, North American Field Operations and Corporate Support.
"It's important not only for the power and productivity it brings
to VINES administrators, but also because it is built on the
experience of the people on the front line -- our own
ANS consultants, VINES users and our channel partners."
The VINES Assistant is valuable for managing both single-server and
multi-server networks. To meet changing needs, the VINES Assistant
will be modified, enhanced or expanded on an ongoing basis with
continuing input from VINES users, channel partners
and Banyan's ANS group. Updates are expected annually.
Initially the VINES Assistant will include the following utilities:
StreetTalkTM Directory Assistance (STDA)
Description Formatter

Server Configuration Inventor Routing Table Reporter
Server Connectivity Monitor Server Capacity Monitor
File System Report Group Object Inventory
Access Rights List Search and Replace Profile Search and

VINES Version 4.0 or later. The VINES Assistant is licensed on a
per-server basis and includes a one-year subscription program which
entitles purchasers to one copy of all enhancements released
within 12 months of purchasing the product.
VINES Assistant has a suggested U.S. list price of $699. Shipments
of VINES Assistant will begin in the U.S. in October, 1991. For
